Lactobacillus is an important part of the oral flora.

When lactobacillus adheres on the teeth, it ferments sugars producing acidic environment, this environment leads to demineralization of the teeth and formation of bacterial biofilm by other bacteria, especially Streptococcus mutans.

Recent studies have proved that lactobacillus could also play a beneficial role in oral health, because they are probiotics.

So we aimed in this study to isolate lactobacillus from oral flora of Syrian individuals and identify the adherent strains.

A total of 94 saliva samples were involved in this study, bacteria were isolated using an enriched culture medium for cultivation fastidious Lactobacillus (MRS culture).

Verifying of bacteria that belong to Lactobacillus genus was done by studying specifications according to reference methods.

As a result, we isolated 42 strains of Lactobacillus from 34 samples (34\94, 36.17%).

Identification of the strains which have adherence capacity (20 strains) was done by bacterial identification strips API50 CHL, results showed 8 strains of L.

Fermentum 1, 4 strains of L.

Salivarius, 3 strains of L.

Pentosus, 2 strains of L.

Fermentum2, 2 strains of L.

Delbrueckii and 1 strain of L.

Rhamnosus.

These isolated adherent strains play an important role as probiotic or cariogenic.
