Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) is the main pro inflammatory cytokine, and can act as endogenous promoter of cancer in many cancer types including breast cancer.

The aim of our study was Evaluating role of serum TNF-α concentrations in Syrian breast cancer patients, and evaluating its correlation with tumor development.

The current study was carried out on 24 breast cancer female patients, controls consisted of two groups: 12 benign breast disease female patients and 12 age matched healthy female controls.

Serum TNF-α concentrations were measured using an enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay.

We observed that Serum TNF-alpha concentrations were significantly increased in breast cancer patients compared to benign breast disease patients and healthy controls (p<0.001), and were significantly associated with advanced-stage, invasive, larger and poorly differentiated tumors, estrogen and progesterone receptors low expression and >3 positive lymph nodes.

We concluded that TNF-α may have a role in breast cancer, and serum TNF-α test could be used as a useful tumor marker for diagnosis, disease development and outcome of breast cancer
