Many factors, both intrinsic and extrinsic, have an effect on the composition, metabolic activity, and pathogenicity of microflora of the mouth.

It has been reported that the presence of a fixed orthodontic appliance greatly inhibits oral hygiene and creates new retentive areas for plaque and debris.

The high oral colonization by the fungal pathogen candida in individuals wearing removable appliances is well documented.

Candida species have also been isolated from dental plaque and caries and subgingival flora.

This study aimed to investigate oral candida before and during fixed and removable orthodontic treatments.

Study samples consisted of 60 patients aged 8-18 years, including 30 using fixed orthodontic and 30 patients having removable orthodontic devices, they had good oral hygiene.

samples were taken at the beginning of treatment with sterile cotton swabs.

Swabs were cultured on sabouroud- chloramphenicol, then incubated at 27 °C for 48 hours.

Four month later, another samples were collected using the same technique, then cultured on the same media.

Our results showed that 23.3% of patients was candida carriers before fixed orthodontic appliances treatment, but they became 56.7% after four months of treatment.

20% of patients was candida carriers before removable orthodontic appliances treatment, and after four months 40% of patients was candida carriers.

There is no statistically significant difference (P=0.827) of candida carriers increase after orthodontic treatment between tow study groups.
