Asthma is chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways.

RANTES (Regulated upon Activation, Normal T-cell Expressed and Secreted) plays an important role in various allergic disorders, since it is a potent chemoattractant for inflammatory cells.

The aim of this study is to determine serum RANTES levels in Syrian children with bronchial asthma in, as a biomarker in clinical evaluation of asthma patients.

This study included 88 children: 68 asthmatic children (38 children with asthma exacerbation, 30 children with stable asthma) and 20 healthy children as controls.

Serum levels of RANTES and Total IgE were measured by ELISA, and automated total blood cells count was done.

The results showed that serum levels of both RANTES and IgE were significantly increased (P=0.0002 and P<0.0001, respectively) in Asmathic children (138.202±36.9966 ng/ml, 280.51±297.66 IU/ml, respectively) as compared with healthy controls.

Asthma exacerbations showed significantly increased levels (p<0.0001, p=0.005) of IgE (363.51±353.48 IU/ml) as compared to healthy controls (86.18±65.41 IU/ml) and to children with stable asthma (175.8±157.55 IU/ml).

Serum RANTES Levels was significantly higher in children with stable asthma (150.962±28.6038 ng/ml), comparing with children with asthma exacerbation (128.128±40.0131 ng/ml), (p=0.010) and with healthy controls (100.781±41.0373 ng/ml), (p<0.0001).

As conclusion, RANTES has important role in asthmatic inflammatory and immune mechanism, and suggests the possibility to use serum RANTES values as a biomarker in clinical evaluation of Asthma, beside the important role of IgE, indicating the Atopy associated with Asthma.
