Rapid and successive developments in the libraries led to the imposition of the concept of knowledge management as one of the pillars that must be relied upon for libraries to sustain and able to increase their effectiveness.

This study aims at providing atheoretical framework for the application of the concept of knowledge management in university libraries based on the review of a range of studies published in the books and journals.

The study includes two main sections: the first part, addresses the basic concepts of knowledge management: the concept of knowledge management, the basic elements of knowledge management, and knowledge management objectives and stages of knowledge management and the requirements for their application The second section entitled "knowledge management in university libraries" deals with different dimensions including : definition of the concept of knowledge management and knowledge management processes and activities, and the importance and benefits of applying knowledge management in the university libraries, the benefits expected to be achieved by the application of knowledge management in university libraries and then presents the most important factors that help achieve success and difficulties that may face the application of knowledge management in university libraries then,presents the principles of applying knowledge management in university libraries as a vision for future environment.

In conclusion, the study provides some recommendations that effectively contribute to the activation of knowledge management in university libraries and its application.

Following are the most important Ones : 1.

Provide library staff with training courses and workshops that are related to the concepts of knowledge management; 2.

Implement team work approach by developing the appropriate organizational culture in libraries.

3.

Develop strategies that support and stimulate the adoption of the concept of knowledge management.
