The option of electricity generation and water desalination with nuclear energy has become a strategic option for Arab countries to respond to water resources scarcity and industrial and socio-economic development.

Recently many Arab countries have expressed their interest in adopting nuclear energy for electricity generation and sea water desalination.

Nuclear power is expected to have a vital role to play in helping to solve these problems and will offer insurance to highly uncertain supplies and escalating costs of fossil fuels.

The Arab desire to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, especially for electricity generation and water desalination, has been expressed clearly by the Arab Summit resolution (Doha 2009) which approved “The Arab Strategy for Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy up to 2020’.

This Article overviews the development of nuclear power technologies and safety worldwide with special emphasis on the capabilities and concerns of Arab countries to introduce nuclear power in their energy mix strategies.

One country in the Arab region will be soon operating a nuclear power plant, while two others are at contractual stage and few countries are actively involved in planning to build nuclear power plants.
