The study aimed at investigating the role of storytelling in developing reading skill to basic first grade students in comparison with the traditional way.

The study sample consisted of (108) male and female students divided into two groups who were taught the alphabets.

The experimental group studied the units of letters for the basic first grade by using short story, while the control group studied the same units by using the traditional way.

A sufficiently valid and reliable achievement test of the above mentioned units of Arabic language subject was developed in order to measure achievement, and it was conducted on the study sample and appropriate statistical analyses was performed.

The results revealed the existence of stastistically significant differences in post-achievement that could be attributed to the method of instruction to the advantage of the experimental group, and the existence of a statistically significant difference in post-achievement that could be attributed to gender (male, female) to the advantage of males.

There was no statistically significant difference in post-achievement that could be attributed to the interaction between method and gender.

The esearchers recommeneded the use of stories in basic education stages for both males and females.
