Recent vision of sustainable tourism development considers local society as part of that development.

Tourism cannot thrive without local citizens’ participation in protecting cultural heritage, social values, touristic resorts, management of touristic projects as well as planning touristic development in their communities.

In this way, they are seen as active and beneficial members for tourism.

The employment of these citizens will improve their lives’ conditions and salaries and their societies, too, will benefit from facilities and general services.In addition, we cannot talk about a real touristic development that harms and damages the values and cultures of local societies and fails to realize economic and social benefits for them.

The aim of this article is to show touristic capacities in Algeria, indexes of this sector, and mechanisms used for the realization of sustainable tourism development.

The article sheds light on the touristic capacities of Msila, characteristics of its local population, and to what extent they play a role in developing tourism in their Wilaya.

It tackles too international experiences in sustainable tourism development to view the main elements of their success.
