The rapid growth of health spending has become a major concern for all Stakeholders in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Despite the fact that many of the studies that have addressed the issue of the determinants of health expenditures in the developed economies, there are few of them which focused on developing countries and particularly MENA countries.

The study uses Panel Analysis Method for the 18 countries of the region over 20 years from the 1995 until the year 2014.

The results showed that the growth of health expenditures rate (340%) during the period (1995-2014) has exceeded GDP growth rate (125%) during the same period.

The study also found that Income, public Spending, Elderly category, Improved Sanitation are the Determinants of the MENA health expenditures growing during the period (1995-2014).

The study suggests the disengagement between the health expenditures and income and the MENA health expenditures must be linked to the people epidemiological situation.

In addition, making people responsible of their health spending will inevitably reduce the level of health spending in MENA.
