In “The Western Illusion of Human Nature”, the American researcher Marshall Sahlins treats the issue of otherness from a structural viewpoint toward human existence and in the light of the factors which affect man’s general behavior.

This article outlines the most prominent ideas in his book and criticizes Western illusions on individuality and the arrogant mindset toward others.

The writer bases his work on human nature as an analytical standard for the Western phenomenon, and it is worth noting that we have chosen this article because of its compatibility with the various approaches included in this issue of “Al-Istighrab” on the concept of individuality and otherness in modern thought.
