The low social status and remuneration for people engaged in the humanities, social sciences and the arts in the contemporary Arab world is problematic.

To explain this, this paper introduces the historical causes that led to the division of labour in the social hierarchy.

The author argues that the social law determining status and remuneration of professions is based on their perceived function within the pyramid-like social hierarchy.

The marginalization of persons in these fields can be explained by the monopolization of administrative, political and economic roles by a small group of elites.

In consequence, the roles of social scientists, for example, are relegated to minimal teaching.

Similarly, artists are relegated to creating the markets and products which cater to the desire for pleasure.

The author argues that the marginalization of these three professions is an indication of incompetent modernization that weakens citizenship-state and contributes to fanaticism.
