Figures of meaning have played a significant role in Arabic literature since old ages until today.

In the history of Arabic literature, litterateurs and belletrists have tried to beatify their works and styles to impress their recipients.

One of these styles, which has excited many scholars, is Imam Ali (PBUH)’s style in Kumail prayer.

This unique style with its explicitness of meaning and good taste uses repetitive and eloquent words to intensify the impression on reader’s soul; and changes the way of speaking from declarative to interrogative and from interrogative to exclamatory and has other technical features which altogether, bring it to the top of eloquence.

In this style, words are not only eloquent, but also true and full of sentiment.

This prayer shows that Imam (PBUH) insisted on two aspects which are the pillars of eloquence and no text can be consolidated without them and the writer/speaker can’t transfer what he needs to his reader/listener without them.

The first pillar is meaning.

Imam (PBUH)’s employment of the figures of meaning such as figurative language, metonymy, simile, metaphor, allegory and declarative and interrogative expressions is not euphuistic.

He has used them naturally and in accordance with the meaning transfer needs.

The second pillar of Imam (PBUH)’s style is music.

Imam (PBUH) has not forgotten the impact of music on the soul of recipient and his sentiment.

So, Imam (PBUH) has used balanced, musical, rhythmic phrases, which are completely compatible with the prayer.

He hasn’t used any unusual word which is unfamiliar to the audience.

Conversely, his words are nice and fine to which the soul is aimed and is encouraged to profit.
