Since ancient times, linguistic communities have coined words to distinguish the varieties of their linguistic productions.

For example, during the pre-Islamic era, Arabs used to distinguish some rhetorical forms such as poetry, myth, and the discourses of magicians and priests.

However, present-day issue of discourse taxonomy does not mean that there is an absence of classifications.

In fact, this issue has received considerable attention from the theorists of literature in the study of literary genres, which was introduced by the Russian Formalists who formed the structuralist school in literature.

The Formalist theory has brought a worthwhile perspective in linguistic typologies.

In this article, we will attempt to show how to move from "genre" to "type" and the reasons for doing that.

We will also illustrate some generic classifications and their typological patterns.
