Historically, the Maghreb was a region had witnessed a rivalry among the major international powers, starting by the late nineteenth century, the European powers were scrambled to dominate the region using to developing a general rules to establishing a European domination areas of the major powers in the continent, within the colonial movement.

This domination was lasted after the second world war and during the cold war, till the foundation of the new world order led by the united states of America, thus the “Maghreb region” became as a candidate to receive a lot of paradoxes of this order, due to the geostrategic situation as an extension to Southern Europe, for its role to control the southern gate of the Mediterranean, it’s possession substantial oil capacities, as well as, the escalation of the new security threats in the region.

As such, the American uniqueness by power after the Soviet Union collapse, and the quest to search for new influences areas, are factors making the “Maghreb” which listed “historically” within the European influence circle, as a contestable region falling in the American concern/ interest, which indicate the beginning of a hidden cold war in the region between the European union and the United States.
