The MCNP5-beta code was used to calculate the reaction rate of 10B(n, α) 7Li reaction, and the neutron energy response of a neutron spectrometer consisting of a polyethylene sphere (of variable diameter) and a BF3 detector for point and disk 252Cf neutron sources.

Based on the energy response, the reaction rates of the 10B(n,α) 7Li reaction were also determined .

The neutron energy response of the disk 252Cf neutron source shows higher values than that obtained with the point neutron source.

The response energy function of disk and point 252Cf neutron sources show clear peaks that respect the peaks of the spectrum of 252Cf neutron source which are located at energies 0.6, 1.0, 2.0 MeV by using the spheres 3.25, 4.20, 5.00 inch and at energies 1.2, 2.0, 5.0 MeV by using the spheres 6.50, 8.00, 10.00 inch and at energies 3.0, 5.0 MeV using the spheres 12.00, 18.00 inch.

The neutron energy response of the detector-spheres combination shows a maximum value for the sphere of 5.00 inch diameter for the disk 252Cf neutron source, where the response with the point neutron source shows a maximum value for the sphere of 6.50 inch diameter .

The energy spectrum for a 252Cf neutron source was obtained from the energy response functions of the disk and point 252Cf neutron sources.

The calculated reaction rates of the 10B(n,α) 7Li reaction for the entire spectra of the point and the disk 252Cf sources agreed well with those calculated from the neutron energy response functions of the point and the disk neutron sources.
