Background and Objective: The relaxant effect of ethanolic extract of Crataegus laevigata was detected on both spontaneous and Phenylephrine-induced contraction of isolated rat portal vein.

Methods and Material: First, the effect of the extract was examined on spontaneous contraction of longitudinal-cut portal fibers.

The extract was added cumulatively to tissues baths.

In another groups of experiments , the portal fibers were contracted by phenylephrine (P.E) then the extract was added similarly as previous.

The changes in contraction were measured and recorded by isolated organ system (I.O.S).

The effect of extract was evaluated and compared by the effect of Diltiazem, the standard vasodilator agent, in the same portal preparations.

Results: the extract exhibited profound and strong relaxant effect on both spontaneous and N.E- induced contraction of portal preparations.

Indeed, the extract potentiates the vasorelaxing effect of Diltiazem.

Conclusion: Crataegus laevigata has obvious relaxant effect that should further of investigated to illustrate the mechanisms with isolation of related active compound(s).
