Non-destructive testing (NDT) is the development and application of technical methods to examine materials and their components in ways that do not impair their usefulness at the time of examination or in the future, in order to detect, locate, measure and evaluate discontinuities, and other imperfections, to assess integrity, properties and composition; and to measure geometrical and physical characteristics and manufacturing defects of different products without exposing these materials or products to any change in their components, characteristics or functions.

In addition to the simple methods such as Visual Testing (VT) and Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), efficient and reliable methods are the methods of radiation-based types, such as X-rays, gamma rays, radioisotope measurements, microwaves, computed tomography and neutron and proton radiation imaging.
