Many international endeavors were put together to achieve uniformity in the law governing the international carriage of goods which would keep in pace with technological developments, enhance free markets economy and expedite the transnational flow of goods.

This has led to the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Carriage of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea in 2008, known as the “Rotterdam Rules”.

This paper is an analysis of the Scope of Application of Rotterdam Rules.

Its main objective is to determine the situations governed by those rules from substantial, geographical to personal aspects.

Furthermore, it aims to determine the appropriateness of the provisions regulating maritime transport of goods in the UAE’s commercial law in terms of the scope of application to modern trends, taking into consideration the developments in this field and the fact that the UAE law contains provisions derived from both the Brussels Convention 1924 and Hamburg Convention 1978.
