When the Caliphate al-Mu’tasim took reign in 218-227AH/ 833-842AD, he faced a complicated and restless situation, as the rebellion of Babak Khorramdin has become more dangerous, and the Byzantian threat lurked at the boeders.

Al-Mu’tasim became in need for a new military element to lean his reign on.

That led to his seeking the new element of Turks who started to arrive successively as migrants, and Islam continued to spread slowly in lands beyond Oxus.

Al-Mutasim moved in steps that had far-reaching implications, as Turks were at that time nomads and were distinctive by their military courage.

That inticed the Caliphate to bring more of them to his land, and so started to buy Turks from the places they came from and fromtheir owners in Baghdad, and he became dependent on them until they became more than 4000 individuals and became a large military force.

But their nomadic nature made them treat people of Baghdad in a barbaric way, roaming the streets with their horses and running into women, men, and children, driving Arab soldiers to confront and hurt them, until people were fed up with their behaviors and both people of Baghdad and the Turks pleaded to the Caliphate to intervine.

The Caliphate was afraid that things would get out of control and he decided to move the Turks out of Baghdad, thinking of the city of Samarra to avoid problems.
