The leftist trend in south of Yemen with its various parties is considered as one aspect of the struggle of ideologies in the Cold-War and its repercussions in the Arab world .This trend has also played a prominent role in the Arab-Orient in general and in south of Yemen and Oman in particular.

The national front was the most prominent gathering of parties and leftist agglomerations in Yemen after the independence and announcement of the establishment of People´s Democratic Republic of Yemen.

Also, it was one of the main fronts of the internal conflict with the aim of standing alone in authority and leading the country within an axis of the socialist camp through directing the heights of the state a socialist orientation.

To achieve this matter, it was necessary to clash with other political trends, beside that, to subdue the military institutions in order to ensure its loyalty.

This was achieved (crystallized) by the establishment of the Yemeni socialist party which alone led the country until the unification between the two parts of Yemen in 1990.
