This research investigates the image of the desert in the Arabic novel at the Mashreq Arab States, since its inception until the end of the twentieth century.

The basic objective is to introduce the Francophone reader and scholar to the status of the desert in the Arabic novel, which is missed in the Francophone academic studies.

The desert image has long been associated with Arabic poetry since its emergence, but it has been noticed to be away from Arabic novel at its beginnings.

How did the Arab novel, which was influenced by the Western narrative during its rise on both form and content, deal with the desert theme as a purely Eastern space? Was desert the ultimate point of separation from the Western narrative? How did the desert space enter the Arab novel through time? What are the features of the Arab desert novel in the orient? In which novels did the desert form a transit space? And where was the centre of major events? What are the most important novels of the desert, and who are the most important writers?.
