The concept of the school map emerged for the first time in France when a method was developed for the implementation of the comprehensive educational reform in 1963.

The French educational system was suffering from problems, the most important of which was the distinction between the groups of students.

In the 1960s, the school map approach was used as an educational planning technique to address the deficiencies in the quantitative planning of education, taking into account the spatial dimension and its resources; and to achieve justice in the distribution of educational services between different geographic regions.

In the 1970s, this technology prevailed to obtain large importance to support educational planning and achieve its objectives.

Thus, the map is: an illustration of the details of any part of the earth's surface, using a set of symbols and markers on a specific scale and a particular projection.

And the school map is defined as a part of the educational map.

The educational map is used to expand education all over states or regions of the state, whereas the school map is restricted to a particular area or a part of it.

Then it is followed by stages of its implementation.
