The aim of the present study is to find out and analyze certain cultural stereotypes that prescribe traditional gender roles in Yemeni society.

For this purpose, the study attempts to identify cultural orientations prevalent among households and the role those orientations play in determining traditional gender roles in society.

The study also seeks to spot light on some religious trends and their influence in shaping cultural perceptions of gender roles.

In this connection, the study may as well point out to the fairness of Islam in terms of gender-based rights and duties.

Methodologically, the study employs a descriptive approach as well as a diachronic approach.

The key concepts in this study are gender, role, and social role.

The analysis of the data has shown that discrimination against women in Yemeni society is cultural - rather than political or legal - in nature, with stereotypes perpetuating gender discrimination in society.

In addition, the study shows that religious trends - with some encouraging and others discouraging women's participation - have contributing to the shaping of social attitudes towards gender roles.
