Arabic is characterized by wide constructions and enormous patterns that enable it to account for psychological and emotional meanings.

Inflection is regarded as the access to obtain those patterns, and the tool by which meanings are distinguished and verbal and nominal meanings extended.

The inflectional patterns might vary, and the various patterns lead to the extension of meaning; and, as it is said, had it not been for the variety of meaning, the inflectional patterns would not have been so different.

Hence, any change of meaning causes a change in the associated pattern.

The investigator of this pattern extension phenomenon observes that it is done as a result of transformations, i.e.

transformations from a verb pattern to another according to the context.

For instance, a discourse might be in the past but switches to the present in the same context to express continuity.

It is a tradition in Arabic that a verb in the past form might denote present or future, and the future form might be intended to express the past; or an object is uttered in the subjective form.

Other transformations involve: extending the pattern from active to passive constructions; or inflectional extensions such as adopting a blended pattern in which an utterance might denote two patterns at the same time.

The present paper aims at investigating this phenomenon (the inflectional extension) and applying it to the ‘Hud’ sura in the holey Koraan.
