The localization of Ba‘li-ra’si, mentioned in three Assyrian texts datable to around 841 BC, has been the subject of many speculations.
Two recent studies suggested that Ba‘li-ra’si might have been located either at the site of Reshba‘l or at the site of Ras ach-chaq‘a-Theouprosopon.
However, the two proposed hypotheses do not seem reasonable upon in-depth reading of the Assyrian texts.
Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to re-examine these two hypotheses, and to propose a new location.
On the other hand, and having located these texts in their historical context, it seems very likely that Ba‘li-ra’si is located on a hill overlooking the sea and the region of Tyre, at the beginning of the road leading from Tyre to Beqaa
الملخص FRE
L’identification de l’emplacement de Ba‘li-ra’si, mentionné dans trois textes de Salmanazar III datables vers 841 av.
J.-C., a fait l’objet de nombreuses spéculations.
Plusieurs études ont été émises à cet égard, dont celles qui localisent Ba‘li-ra’si au site de Reshba‘l et au Ras ach-chaq‘a-Theouprosopon.
Ces deux hypothèses nous semblent loin d’être plausibles et méritent d’être réexaminées à la lumière des nouvelles découvertes archéologiques.
Par contre, nous suggérons, à la base d’une lecture plus adéquate des textes et des prospections archéologiques récents au Mont-Liban, une nouvelle localisation du toponyme Ba‘li-ra’si.
Il nous paraît très probable que ce toponyme rarissime mentionné dans les sources assyriennes se situe sur une colline donnant sur la mer et la région de Tyr, au début de la route qui mène de Sidon vers la Beqa‘
