Most studies indicate that the demand for electricity in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) will triple in 2050, accelerating the growth of electricity generated from nuclear and renewable energies other than fossil-based ones.

In 2050, solar power will be the main source in MENA countries with 39% of the total supply and wind power will account for 28%.

In recent years, solar energy has seen significant investments in Jordan and Oman.

Electricity sector in MENA appears to be in contradiction, as the region hosts the largest oil and gas reserves.

Most of Arab countries have been able to supply electricity by nearly 100% to their citizens.

However, it seems that these countries are unable to keep pace with the rapid population growth and the increase of economic and technological needs of their citizens at the same time.

In this context, Arab countries have sought to generalize the supply of electricity.

Most of them have relied on support funds to cover the electricity production cost and provide it to vulnerable social groups of citizens at affordable prices.

Support funds have become a burden on the economies of Arab countries, accounting for 48% of global compensation, 8.4% of GDP of oil-exporting countries and 6.3% of GDP of oil-supplying countries .
