A laboratory experiment was conducted in order to develop an effective and rapid screening tool to assess the genetic variability for the response of some Atriplex species to polyethylene glycol-induced osmotic Sress at early growth Sage (Seedlings), and to identify the moS osmotic Sress tolerant species.

It has been found that the osmotic Sress (- 1.2 Mpa) is considered as the lethal osmotic level, because it reduced the length of roots and shoot by 54.6, 53.3% respectively, and this coincides with the definition of the lethal osmotic level, while the osmotic Sress level (- 1.2 Mpa) is considered as the optimum osmotic induction level, because the reduction of root length at this level was the leaS (9.09%) at the end of the growth recovery.

There were significant differences in the response of the inve^igated atriplex species to osmotic Sress.

Atriplex halimus showed higher tolerance, where it showed comparatively lesser reduction in the length of roots and shoot (17.71, 8.95% respectively), while the reduction in these two parameters was comparatively higher in the species Atriplex polycarpa (25.00,17.87% respectively), so it can be classified as a sensitive species to osmotic Sress during the seeding Sage.
