الملخص EN

The port of Safaga occupies a distinct geographic location at the regional level as the outlet for the governorates of Upper Egypt, especially the governorates of Minya, Assiut, Sohag, Qena, Aswan, and the New Valley.

At the same time, the port enjoys great importance at the national level as an alternative to the port of Suez.

The port is ranked fourth in terms of relative importance after the ports (Alexandria - Port Said - Suez) and the importance of the port is no longer dependent on the political and military conditions and events, as was the case in the past during the various historical periods.

In addition to the completion of the extension of the railway line - Abu Tartur - Safaga during 1984 the port became a more distinguished location.

Where the port reaches Qena and the phosphate mines of Abu Tartur in the New Valley and connects it at the same time to the railway line of Upper Egypt, and then shows us the effect of the regional guidance on the port site and after its completion, the railway was neglected during the revolution of 25 January 2011 and 3 February 2014, armed gangs seized the lines, bars and missions of the Safaga-Qena railway line in the Red Sea, which is used to transport phosphate and imported wheat, in looting that began from 2011 until February 2014.

Sources in the Railways estimated the distance taken by armed gangs 200 km, stretching from Qena to the mines Phosphate and port of Abu Tartur in Safaga city, and were cut and sold to scrap dealers for supply to the iron factories in Alexandria and Cairo, while the train stopped on the line completely and completely disappeared, and then the port was developed during the period from 2013 to 2017 and reopened on the fifth of January 2017 .
