The objective of this research is to evaluate the operating efficiency of commercial banks in Saudi Arabia using data envelopment analysis (DEA) models, through studing seasonal variations between Saudi’s commercial banks according to intermediation approach.

Data was collected from the quarterly and yearly financial statements of Saudi’s commercial banks of the financial year 2016.

CCR and BCC models of the DEA were used.

Two inputs (Net Fixed Assets, Customers Deposits) and two outputs (Net Loans & Advances, Net Operating Income) were selected.

Many important results have been extracted; i.e, the average operating efficiency of all banks and at all seasonal levels ranged between (96%-97%) according to CCR model and (97%-99%) according to BCC model, which indicates in general the powerfulness of Saudi banking system.

Moreover, discusions have been made to the un-used inputs with the assumption of fixing outputs, and maximizing the outputs with assumption of fixed inputs for each and every 1st, 2nd, 3rd quarter and at the end of the financial year 2016 for all the inefficient banks.

Moreover, recommendations have been made for improving inefficient banks during a certain season to be efficient either by benfitting from the un-used inputs, or maximizing its outputs with the available inputs.
