Sheih Abdulakder Elmajawi (1914-1848) is one of Algeria’s most celebrated historical figures who left a decisive imprint on cultural life and the reform movement.

He is a symbol of resistance against French colonialism at the turn of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, and also one of the earliest reformists who pioneered to pave the way for the reform movement in Algeria without being explicitly involved in the then political debates and wrangling, which would often lead to imprisonment or exile.

Abdulakder Elmajawi is both a conservative and progressive who succeeded to bring together the dichotomy of traditionalism and modernity.

Thanks to his knowledge and dynamism, he earned the title “Sheikh Eljamaa” i.e.

leader of the group and the father of the “Modern Algerian Renaissance” with his focus on knowledge, religion and motherland.

Ironically, his birth date in 1848 coincided with the termination of Amir Abdulkader resistance and his exile.

Thus, the date of his death was the very same year where Abdulhamid Ibn Badis launched his educational movement, representing therefore the lasting continuity between generations.
