The linguist translator cannot be satisfied with a normative knowledge of two languages when he comes to translating one into the other.
He must apply to ethnolinguistics which help him to approach what dictionnaires cannot supply : culture.
In fact, even if the universals of language belong to all men, they form a nomenclature which is limited in quality by the fact that their transposition its external to mathematical exactness (for the needs and the conditions which determine the cultural features are variable)-and in quantity owing to the fact that these universals represent a restricted part of the lexicon.
Cultures form their own instruments of communication without referring to a semantic international standard.
The translator is thus compelled to replace the word into its original context, if he wants to be able to measure all its dimensions

Le linguiste qu’est le traducteur ne peut se satisfaire, pour assurer le passage du contenu d’un parler a un autre, de la connaissance normative des deux langues.
II doit recourir a l’eth-nolinguistique qui l’aide a apprehender ce que les dictionnaires ne peuvent pas lui livrer : la culture.
En effet, meme si les universaux du lan gage sont le fait de tous les hommes, ils consti-.
tuent une nomenclature limitee qualitativement parce que' leur transposition echappe a l’exacti-tude mathematique (les besoins et les conditions qui determinent les traits de culture varient) et quantitativement dans la mesure ou ces universaux representent une part limitee du lexique.
Les cultures forgent leurs propres instruments de communication sans referer par principe a un canon semantique international.
Le traducteur se voit done contraint de replacer le mot dans son contexte originel pour en mesurer toutes les dimensions
