This article argues that the rise of China is a complex and non-linear process, and cannot be conceived of through the reductionist assumptions advocated by the mainstream’s rationalist theories (realism, institutionalism, and constructivism).

It seeks to introduce complexity theory as an alternative approach to nonlinear phenomena – including the rise of China – in an increasingly complex world.

The article is divided into two parts.

The first part discusses the mainstream’s approaches to China's rise.

It classifies them into two sets: the pessimists who argue that China's rise will be violent; and the optimists who, on the contrary, hope that it might be peaceful.

The second part seeks to cast light on the insights provided by complexity theory in IR about the rise of China.
