Interest in archeology in Palestine has increased in recent years at the academic and official levels.

Despite its late appearance, archaeological programs were implemented at Palestinian universities.

The first was the Institute of Archeology at Birzeit University in 1976.

It was followed by the Higher Institute of Archeology at Al-Quds University / Abu Dis, then at AlNajah National University in Nablus, the Islamic University in Gaza and Hebron University.

Officially, the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and archeology was established in 1994 after the signing of the Oslo Agreement between the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO and Israel, which controlled Palestinian antiquities from 1967 until the date of signing the agreement, which divided the West Bank into areas (A, B, C), Israel controls the antiquities in Area C.

The Antiquities Law, which was in force in Palestine, was a Jordanian law in 1966.

As a result of the Palestinian National Authority 's policy of controlling its territory, in 2018 it adopted a new antiquities law instead of the old one.
