Russian-Iranian relations have moved to a new stage in bolstering bilateral cooperation in relations between Moscow and Tehran since 2009, in light of repeated criticism by Iranian government officials against Russia as a result of the latter's support for international sanctions against Tehran.

The UN Security Council adopted on June 9, 2010 Resolution 1929, which included a new package of international sanctions against Iran.

It is the most difficult decision among the previous resolutions in terms of weapons, financial and navigational.

Russia is also motivated by its vital economic interests to maintain peaceful nuclear cooperation with Iran.

Its concerns over its strategic interests prompt it to slow down or at least suspend such cooperation if necessary.

This is linked to Russia's assessments of Iran's nuclear program, which may not necessarily coincide with the American and European vision.

Russia therefore had a supportive role in resolving the Iranian nuclear crisis by signing a nuclear agreement with Iran in mid-July 2015, which set out on its terms and commitments a solution to the bitter dispute that has long been the mistrust of the West and the United States
