The purpose of this study is to explore the technique of iltifāt (apostrophe) in the short stories of Edward Al-Kharrat.

The study combines rhetoric and narrative in the framework of a structuralist and stylistic approach in an attempt to expose the nature of the narrative language in Al-Kharrat’s short stories.

The study focuses on two collections of short stories by Al-Kharrat: Hitan Aliya (High Walls) and Saat al-kibriyaa (Hours of Pride).

The study is divided into two sections.

Section I.

The Technique of Iltifāt (apostrophe) in the Short Stories of Edward Al-Kharrat: This section deals with the consistency of the narrative text in AlKharrat’s stories through iltifāt or apostrophe and its impact on AlKharrat’s short stories in Hitan Aliya (High Walls) and Saat alkibriyaa (Hours of Pride).

Four types of iltifāt or apostrophe can be discerned in Arabic rhetoric: a) al-Ihalah (anaphora) and al-Iltifāt (apostrophe) or shifts of person; b) iltifāt or shifts of verbs: past, present, and imperative; c) iltifāt or shifts of purposes and meanings; and d) iltifāt or shifts of number, from muthanna (two) to jam' (plural) and from jam' (plural) to mufrad (one).

Section II.

The narrative discourse in the Short Stories of Edward AlKharrat: This section deals with the communicative structure that controls the narrative structure and narrative language and ultimately forms the narrative techniques in the language of narration, i.e.

the relationship between the narrator and the narratee
