The book of sheikh Aḥmad al-Maqqarī (d.

1041 AH) «The Garden of Myrtle of Aromatic Scents and the Memories of The Scholars Whom I Met in the Two Metropolises: Marrakesh and Fes»)1(, is one of the most important sources dealing with the scientific movement in Morocco in the period of Sultan Ahmed Al-Mansur Al-Thahabi whose reign lasted more than a quarter of a century (986-1012 AH).

al-Maqqarī devoted this book to present the Ulemas (the scholars) of Marrakech and Fes, those he met during his first trip to Morocco which lasted about two years ; during which he moved between the two cities referred to.

He devoted the first part of the book to talk about Sultan Ahmed Al-Mansur and his civilization al achievements and the second part to define about thirty four scholar (Alim) and Writer (Adeeb) those he met in Marrakesh and Fes, and whom he attended their lessons or debated them in some scientific issues.

No researcher can avoid the book of «The Garden of Myrtle» in studying the scientific life in Morocco because it provides to researchers an abundant scientific material about the care of Sultan Ahmed Al-Mansur about science and scholars, the cultural establishments that the sultan and some members of his family built such as Mosques, Libraries and Endowments (awkaf) that they had stopped on it ; and his material care about Scholars and Poets, also encouraging them to write books and poems.

The book also provides us with a lot of information about the Scholars and writers of Morocco at that time
