Throughout the last decades we knew that Authority Data is “a data which gives the authoritative form selected for a heading of a personal name, corporate name, family name, place name, uniform title, subject, etc.

in the library catalog or the file of bibliographic records, and are listed in an authority file containing headings of library items”.

Therefore, the authority work is considered one of the most important main functions within the technical preparation processes in libraries.

This work aims at reviewing these works.

The overview includes four parts.

The first part, is about definitions and concepts of authority data or authority control.

The second part of the review, contains the theoretical framework about authority control, introduces and describes it, and explains why authority control exists.

The third part, explains Authority data standards over literature.

The fourth part, contains applications and efforts about authority data in Arabic and foreign names, places and subjects over literature of limits of the overview.

This article identifies the main topics achieved and the gaps and opportunities to be developed as further research.
