Abstract Since The end of 1954.

The British and American governments exerted substantial attempts on the Syrian governments to join the Baghdad pact.

1955.

Relying on British and American documents, this study is an attempt to explore the nature of these attempts; its scopes and methods that all aimed at the end to force Syria to join the Baghdad pact.

These attempts however, varied: they included, direct diplomatic and political pressure on the Syrian Governments, using Iraq and Turkey as tools to persuade or even threaten the Syrian to join the pact, utilizing the Syrian opposition parties and groups, and encouraging them to form a counter political coalition to the government's policy which supported the Iraqi position and accepting the joining ol Syria in the Baghdad Pact, and finally plotting, designing and financing a clandestine plans which carried out by the British intelligence service (MI6) and American central intelligence Agency (CIA) that would overthrow the Syrian government and would establish a new government friendly to the west and would accept the enrolment of Syria in the Baghdad Pact.

However, the change of that D-day to the 29° October 1956.

by the Iraqis and probably the British, coincided with the D-day of the Suez War 1956 This new D-day had aborted operation “Straggle", thus all American and British attempts to force Syria into joining the Baghdad Pact ended in fiasco.
