As fishing is becoming a complex activity in an imbalanced situation between the resources and fishing effort nearly all over the world, the need lo formulate a group of socioeconomic indicators became more than necessary.

In this context, this paper presents a preliminary study on physical productivities of production factors as part of the socioeconomic indicators in the Algerian fisheries.

Data collection which started in the end of 2002 has focused on a group of data set which represents at most the fleet characteristics useful in physical productivity interpretation.

Henceforth, various proxy variables have been identified and used lo monitor the fishing effort in such a way to calculate the physical productivity of the different attributes to be compared with similar indicators in western Mediterranean Sea region.

Unfortunately, Identification of a combination of attributes that best reflects the productivity of heterogeneous fishing units has not been dealt with in this study.
