Aqueous extracts from the dry roots of black nightshade (Solanum nigrum L.) were obtained using soxhlet extraction method.

The effects of the extracts on the germination and growth of lettuces (Lactuca sativa L.) seedling were examined.

Aqueous extract was partitioned by successive extractions using diethyl ether and bicarbonate solution.

The fractions from these extracts were analyzed using thin layer chromatography.

The results indicated that the aqueous extract significantly reduced germination and seedlings length.

Germination was also reduced in the seeds treated with some of the organic and aqueous extracts.

Several spots were recovered on the plates from each fraction, and their Rf values were measured and found to be different.
