In this paper, I address an issue that is deeply rooted in both criticism and rhetoric; ie the “deviation” in language.

“Deviation”, albeit it is a main issue in rhetoric studies due to its revelations and indications of indications, its position in criticism is different from that in rhetoric considering the judgmental nature of criticism.

I believe that Qudama Ibn Ja'afar'sNaqd Ash-Sh'ir “Criticism of Poetry” has clear and accurate references to “deviation” according to the abovementioned point of view.

It divides deviation into good eloquent deviation and defective deviation.

This point of view depends on a number of limitations and criteria which will be detailed throughout these pages.
