In order to address the problem of poverty, policies and programs have been used in many countries of the world to alleviate poverty and address many social phenomena in society.

In Iraq, in view of the circumstances that prevailed over the past three decades, the number of poor and disadvantaged in society has increased.

The policies and programs adopted by the successive Iraqi governments to alleviate poverty are the public distribution system (ration card), the social protection network, and the provision of soft loans for income generation.

These policies have a lot of money.

The ration card system plays a major role in providing basic foodstuffs that all the poor in Iraq depend on.

However, they contain large financial costs that burden the state because this system includes the rich and the poor, which requires reforms on this system.

The role of the social protection network in providing cash subsidies to the poor, which were insufficient to meet the basic life requirements and coverage of individuals not eligible for assistance.

Moreover, the program of providing income-generating micro-loans contributed to the employment of thousands of unemployed, These projects implemented or not, as well as weak supervision of those projects by the government, which requires tightening control measures and follow-up of those projects in order to achieve the goals set for poverty alleviation.
