Abstract EN

In northern Nigeria, the qur’anic school is the first school after the house where children learn the Holy Quran and the principles of the Islamic religion, which is the basic centre for the teaching of Arabic literacy since pre-British colonization in the region.

After the arrival of Western education, English became the official language of the state used in general educational curricula, forgetting the role of the community in educating its members the principles of Arabic reading and writing, which plays a positive role in the teaching of the Islamic religion.

Therefore, this research aims to highlight the role of the Nigerian qur’anic schools in teaching young people the skill of reading at the traditional level in order to clarify the contributions of these schools in Nigeria in general and in the city of Kano in particular.

The research addresses the problems facing these schools.

Finally, it proposes the solution which includes: renewing the curricula of these schools, preparing the system objectively, combining the past and the present by using modern advanced technologies.

The importance of this research is that it highlights the contributions of Nigerian scholars in teaching Arabic reading skill to none native speakers.

It also explains the educational system of the qur’anic schools in the city of Kano as well as pointing its capacity in the Nigerian society.

The researcher uses the descriptive approach in clarifying the research content.
