Family and marriage in the Maghreb in the Middle AgesThe family is the basic building block of any society, and marriage is the only way to form families, especially in Muslim societies which consider the existence of a family outside marriage as a sin and morally unacceptable matter in Islamic law.

In this regard, Islamic law has urged on the necessity and importance of marriage.

It is noted that the customs and traditions of marriage in the Islamic Maghreb have not changed much from what they are now; however, the difference may lie in the view of marriage between today's society and yesterday's society.

While man is nowadays reluctant to marry, the man in the Middle Ages used to attach great importance to the family and the birth of children.
