The reformist movement can be traced back to the 1920s and 1930s headed by several scholars such as Abdelhamid ben Badis whom called for Algerians to return to the sources of Islam.

in Bou saada a small band of young and well educated men lead the reformist movement.

the efforts of reform had not only weakened the social role of the Sufi brotherhoods represented by old Hamel zaouïa, and their cooperation with the French colonial administration, but had also brought about the establishment of a great network of reform in education and culture.

these men like Abderrahmane al-Daisy, Abul-Qasem al-Hefnawi, Ahmad Jeddou, Etienne Dini, Mohammed Bin Baskar and Abdul Qader Ammari had a great role not only in Bousaada but even at national levels.
