Abstract EN

This article seeks to trace the repercussions of the growing Chinese economic presence in the Arab world on the authoritarian rule in the region.

China seems to be convinced that its economic interests in the region will be better achieved by dealing with regimes which are similar to the Chinese model of government, and this necessarily means that China prefer the continued ence of democracy in the region.

Thus, the record of Chinese policy in the region has shown that Beijing has further strengthened its relations with authoritarian governments, not only in economic cooperation, but also in new forms of political support, as it happened in China's objection to Security Council resolutions condemning the Syrian regime since 2011.

On the other hand, China has become a model of achieving economic welfare without submitting to western standards of democracy and human rights.

However, the declared admiration for the Chinese experience was not accompanied by an adaptation of the governance system to benefit from the lessons of the Chinese success, especially what has a relation with good governance and fighting corruption.
