Abstract EN

For more than a century, the Algerian society has suffered from a tightened French educational colonial policy, with its cruel effects on the behaviour of its members to a such extent that is came to experience a void in the soul, a stigma in the faith and a collapse in the ethics due to the illiteracy which became its dominant feature.

When the Reform Movement emerged in Algeria at the beginning of the first half of the twentieth century, its philosophy was based upon the resuscitation of this spirit and the resistance against the colonial policy with all the available means.

The revival of education in free mosques established by the Association of Ulema in Algeria since its inception was one of the most important means on which it has relied to have an impact on the society.

Through the educating, training and refinement of the largest number of the sons of Algeria, it aimed that the latter recover from the toll of destruction directed against their spirit, faith and morals and revive their vigilance and consciences.

The association adopted a method of cultural confrontation with French colonialism to reduce the latter' blinding policy.

The various free mosques that the Association has created since the 1930s have stood strong and unshakeable and its activity did not cease until the outbreak of the Algerian Liberation Revolution.
