Abstract EN

This study seeks to clarify the concept of ‘advocate of letters’ and ‘advocate of meanings’ in Islamic law, defining the features of their doctrines in understanding the text, and considering the objectives and rational causes of legislation.

It also shows the difference between the both doctrines, and the criticisms that Ibn al-Qayyim made towards them.

The study adopts an inductive approach through tracing the parts of the topic from the various sources, and then combining their divergences.

Moreover, it adopts an analytical method by transmitting their sayings and criticizing them, and stating the power they reflect.

The study concludes that difference is a divine canon that is inevitable.

This includes different understandings and different methods of inference.

The term (advocate of letters) expresses the one who adheres to the apparent meaning of the word and neglects the hidden meaning, and the term (advocate of meaning) expresses those who adhere to the word and the meaning together, however, with an apparent devotion to the meaning.

The study also concludes that despite the extravagance of the two parties, each of them on one side (namely, for advantage of letter or advantage of meaning); the advocates of letters are exposed, in their understanding of the text, to many shortcomings in grasping of the textual connotations, and the advocates of meanings are exposed to a lot of shortcomings in understanding the objectives and extending the rational causes to their suitable locations, in a fit and realistic manner.
