Abstract EN

This descriptive correlational study aims to identify the role of the local satellite channels in formation of collegians’ attitudes toward public demonstration and protests in Iraq.

The study included a convenience sample of 250 university students.

The researcher used an online survey that includes three parts; the sociodemographic sheet, the follow-up and exposure styles, and the attitudes formations parts.

The research problem lays in the main question of “what are the local satellite channels that contribute to form the collegians’ attitudes toward the public demonstrations and protests in Iraq?” There are a couple of sub-questions that evolved from this question which are : 1.

what are the local satellite channels that the collegians adopted as a source of information about the public demonstrations and protests in Iraq? 2.

what are the local satellite channels that the collegians prefer in following the public demonstrations and protests in Iraq up? 3.

what are the reasons behind collegians’ preferences for one satellite channel over another to follow the demonstrations and protests up? 4.

what is the collegians’ level of satisfaction with the management of the local satellite channels to the demonstrations and protests in Iraq? 5.

what the reasons behind collegians’ dissatisfaction with the management of the local satellite channels to the demonstrations and protests in Iraq? and 6.

what is the nature of attitudes formed among collegians toward the demonstrations and protests? This study aims to answer these questions.

The researcher used the Theory of Dependency in Media as a theoretical framework.

Data were analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) for windows, version 26.

The statistical measures of frequency, percent, mean, standard deviation, simple linear regression, independent-sample t-test, and paired-sample t-test were used.

The study results revealed that the majority have neutral attitudes toward the coverage of the Iraqi satellite channels for the public demonstrations and the protests in Iraq.

The largest mind image formed among subjects a result of watching the Iraqi satellite channels is asking a root change and reforming the political process, followed by launching early elections and unfasten the Iraqi parliament; settling a fair election law up and formulating an independent election authority.

Furthermore, less than a third are undecided about coverage of the Iraqi satellite channels for the public demonstrations and the protests in Iraq, followed by those who are totally disagreed about such a coverage, and those who are disagreed about such a coverage
