Abstract EN

This paper is biographical study of Imam Malik Bin Anas and his relationship with the Abbasid caliphs as deduced from some of hisjuristic views and books.

This study revealed that the Imam has quoted the honourable prophetic sayings “al-Hadith” from the best scholars of his time.

He used to receive students from different places.

He used to teach and train them how to recite al-Hadith.

However, he did not leave al-Madina al- Munawwara.

It is to be noted that the Imam was very accurate and precise in tracing the sayings of the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him).

He did not tend to believe in a certain view unless necessary or in case of lack of evidence.

A certain Hadith quoted by Abu Hureira from the prophet (peace and blessings be upon tom) says :“wherever you go and whatever hard efforts you might exert, you will not find a better scholar than that of al- Madina.

There is a sort of agreement on who is referred to by this Hadith - it is Malik bin Anas, the most brilliant scholar in the prophetic sayings.

This made Muhammed Abdul-Wahab,ttejudge, saying that no one of other creeds can suspect the authenticity our Hadiths for we have the great Imam ofAl-Madina.

The Imam kept a good relationship with the two Abbasid caliphs: Abu Jaafar al-Mansour and Harun al-Rashid, though he was beaten by the governor of Al-Madina during the reign of al-Mansour due to his verdict on the movement of Muhammed Thil Nafs al-Zakiyya.

Al-Mansour did appologize to him and he assured him, by a complete divorce, that he knew nothing about the incident.

Ibn Mehdi said : the glorious Quran aside there is no more useful book for people than Maliks’ Muwatta.

He also stated that he knew nothing ofthe people’s knowledge, after Quran, better than that of Malik.
